'TWERE DISHONOUR TO YIELD
OR THE BATTLE TO SHUN

SERJEANT JAMES HENRY WELLS

THE QUEEN'S ROYAL WEST KENT REGIMENT

3RD JULY 1916 AGE 26

BURIED: BLIGHTY VALLEY CEMETERY, AUTHUILLE WOOD, FRANCE

Serjeant Wells' inscription comes from the penultimate verse of the martial-sounding hymn, 'We Are Soldiers of Christ': soldiers in the battle against "satan, the flesh and the world".

Now let each cheer his comrade, let hearts beat as one
While we follow where Christ leads the way;
'Twere dishonour to yield, or the battle to shun,
We will fight, we will watch, we will pray.
